Rob Baines' Cartoons

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What do you use to draw your cartoons?
A: I draw the cartoons in pencil first on a standard A4 sketch pad, next I go over them in black ink.  These are scanned into the computer for colouring using Adobe Flash. (I know it's an animation tool, but I've just got used to using it for colouring stuff in.)

Q: How long does it take to do a cartoon?
A: I can normally draw the black outline of a cartoon on a journey to/from work, which is about 1 hour 30 mins total.  For caricatures I add the heads afterwards from a photograph.  So along with the colouring a single figure cartoon can take roughly 3-4 hours in all.

Q: Where do you get your ideas?
A: Inspiration tends to occur at the strangest of times.  During work, travelling, family occasions, sleeping.  Often ideas pop into my head, the real trick is actually remembering them.

Q: Have I answered your question?
A: If not why not ask me? Don't be shy.
